Body jewelry is measured both by “gauge” and “diameter” or “length”. The “gauge” refers to the thickness of the jewelry (the smaller the number, the thicker the jewelry). The “diameter” refers to the inside diameter of a ring. The “length” refers to the length of a barbell or curved barbell between balls (rather than the total length of the jewelry including balls).
Common Styles of Body Jewelry:

Captive Bead Ring: The bead on this type of ring is held captive by the pressure of each end of the jewelry. This type of jewelry can be opened by “popping out” the bead (it does not unscrew). This is a very popular style of jewelry that can be worn in many piercings including ear, nostril, septum, eyebrow, lip, nipple and various genital piercings. |

Barbell: A straight bar with a threaded ball on each end. Depending upon the manufacturer, one or both balls may unscrew. Barbells can be either “internally threaded” or “externally threaded” (see definitions below). This style of jewelry is commonly used in tongue piercings, and is sometimes worn in nipple, ear, eyebrow or various genital piercings. |

Circular Barbell: Same as a barbell but round (kind of shaped like a horseshoe). Commonly worn in any piercing a ring would be worn in. |

Curved Barbell: Same as a barbell but slightly curved (like the moon when there’s only a sliver of it). This style of jewelry is commonly used in navel piercings, and is sometimes worn in eyebrow or Prince Albert piercings. |

Flat Back Labret (AKA Disc Back Labret): This jewelry is flat on one side so it can be worn in oral piercings with reduced risk of damage to teeth and gums.

Nostril Screw: Modeled after the traditional East Indian design, this style of nostril jewelry looks like a stud from the outside, but has a unique bend on the inside which holds the post in place without a bulky (and debris collecting) earring back. |
|
Septum Retainer: This U shaped piece of jewelry is worn up inside the nose to completely hide a septum piercing. |
Types of Threaded Jewelry:
![]() |
Externally Threaded Jewelry: This refers to threaded jewelry that has threads on the outside of the post and on the inside of the ball that comes off (the ball is the girl and the post is the boy). This style of jewelry is not suggested for use in piercings that are not well healed, as the threads often have rough edges that can damage the inside of the piercing. |
|
Internally Threaded Jewelry: This refers to threaded jewelry in which the (female) bar has a threaded hole in the end that the threads that are coming out of the (male) ball can screw into. This style of jewelry will generally cost more than externally threaded jewelry because of higher manufacturing costs. |
